There’s Ugly. Then There’s Betty!
A few years ago — there was this pre-noontime telenovela na nagpahinto sa buhay ng mga tao sa Pilipins. And when I say humihinto ang mundo ng mga Pinoy … hindi ako nag-exaggerate. I am a living witness to this. Who would not remember — Betty La Fea. I was able to catch a few episodes of this series nung nagbakasyon ako sa Pinas. Tingin ko – swak na swak kasi ito sa panglasa ng Pinoy viewing public. All the right ingredients are there…. poor-ugly girl falls in love with a rich handsome boy… handsome boy deadma si ugly girl but eventually falls in love with her because of her good heart…. ugly duckling girl turns into a beautiful swan by removing the ridiculous glasses, bracers and bangs…. And they live happily ever after …. Your typical Cinderella story. Ewan ko ba bakit patok na patok sa ating mga Noypi ang ganitong cliché — and that includes me… well sometimes…
Fast forward … September 2006. — Ugly Betty premiered in the United States with America Ferrera. It was also shown here in Singapore few months after. The show was a huge hit catapulting America Ferrera to stardom and comedy actress darling status. I was able to watch a couple of episodes and found it amusing and funny. Yun nga lang… dahil sa mga pangyayari sa buhay… di ko ito talagang napanood ng dibdiban.
Few weeks ago – nagkaroon ng pagkakataon na mapasakamay ko ang buong Season 1 ng Ugly Betty. Ako ay lubos na natuwa. Unang-una… dahil sa libre… ikalawa… dahil sa mapapanood ko na rin ito sa wakas. I was able to watch half of the season so far and I am hooked. Nakakatawa talaga si Betty. Her character is quite strong. She was able to rise from one bad situation to another with just here naivity and innate goodness. Syempre – hindi mawawala ang mga misadventures at kaengotan nya. Katawa talaga. I also like Vanessa William’s character…. Wilhelmina Slater. Galing nya umarterng Ice Queen.. pero para din pala syang Mentos… hard on the outside… pero soft and chewy from the inside lalo na when it comes to lovelife and her daughter. I am not too fond of the actor playing Daniel Meade…. Ewan ko… feeling ko lang miscast sya. Pero oks na rin… Pwede na pagtiyagaan. The other supporting characters are quite good as well… lalo na yung mga assistants…. They add spice to an already good show. Sa mga Salma Hayek fans na tulad ko – the elevator scene in Episode 6 is a must see. Isa lang ang masasabi ko….HUBBA…HUBBA! J I still have half of the first season to watch… and I hope na singganda ito nung first half of the season. I am also looking forward to Season 2.
Mapa Betty La Fea man… or Ugly Betty…. the show storyline may not be that original… but it’s characters more than made up for it. Kung nag-iisip ka ng mapapanood on a lonely rainy Saturday…. tingin ko… this should be on the top of your list…. Tandaan… Ugly is the new Beautiful!
