Ang Daan Pabalik sa Pag-ibig

July 31, 2007

I am bringing back Movie Nights! My friends and I used to have Movie Marathon Day  when I was still in the Philippines. That’s  one whole day devoted to the love of cinema hehehehe. The most movie we have seen so far is 4.  Pero hindi yan ang pag-uusapan natin. Movie nights! Yup. Nights lang muna… wag day… masyadong ambisyoso pag day. So Movie nights! Kailangan ko mag-catch up on the movies that I have missed.  Sinimulan ko ang movie nights last Friday.  I decided na since it’s the initial movie nights – kailangan light and non-thinking movie ang panoorin ko.  I rented Music and Lyrics, Van Wilder and Norbit.  Wala masyado choice e.  I bought 2 pc original KFC chicken – thigh, a bag of Doritos – cheddar, and an ice-cold Coke – regular.  Movies, chicken, chips and drinks! Kumpletong kumpleto na di ba?

I first started watching Music and Lyrics. Everyone I know who have watched it – loved it. Anyway – the movie was really good. I enjoyed it tremendously. May mga ilang jokes na di ko nakuha pero all in all it was a really good movie.  Its not an Oscar worthy movie – pero it was really entertaining.  The songs are great as well. I particularly love the main them – Way back into love. Cool na cool din ang Pop and Don’t Write Me Off. Nakaktawa talaga ang 80’s no? Hehehehe….  I love this movie so much – that I watched it again the following day. Ganun? I haven’t seen any Wham MTV – kaya naniwala na lang ako.

Cheesiest line in the movie???? Definitely the one I pasted below :

Alex Fletcher: It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just spit it out. They’re just lyrics.
Sophie Fisher: “Just lyrics”?
Alex Fletcher: Lyrics are important. They’re just not as important as melody.
Sophie Fisher: I really don’t think you get it.
Alex Fletcher: Oh. You look angry. Click your pen.
Sophie Fisher: A melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physican attraction. Sex.
Alex Fletcher: I so get that.
Sophie Fisher: But then, as you get to know the person, that’s the lyrics. Their story. Who they are underneath. It’s the combination of the 2 that makes it magical.

As for the other two movies that I rented – Van Wilder is forgettable and not worth a review. Di ko pa napapanood yung Norbit. J

Meet the Walkers

July 31, 2007

I chance upon a show in Mediacorp Channel 5 couple of weeks ago. The show is “Brothers and Sisters”. I decided to watch it — mainly because of the powerhouse cast. Calista Flockhart (from Ally Mc Beal), Rachel Griffiths (from Six feet under), Sally Field and Ron Rifkin (Sloane in Alias) are the most popular ones. After the 1st episode – I was “slightly” hooked. The storyline is not really that new – pero somehow the actors are doing such a good job that you feel every scene is new. It revolves around the Walker family siblings and their mother. Father walker died on the first episode — and afterwards… the drama started. To appreciate the series – you must first get to know the Walker family — so… I pasted an excerpt from Wikipedia :

The main branches of the Walker family tree included father William (guest star Tom Skerritt), mother Nora (Sally Field), and their five children.

The Walker siblings are, in birth order:

Sarah, a working mother, played by Rachel Griffiths

Kitty, the Communications Director for US Senator McCalister, played by Calista Flockhart

Tommy, a businessman, played by Balthazar Getty Kevin, an openly gay lawyer, played by Matthew Rhys

Justin, a veteran of the Afghanistan war and a drug addict, played by Dave Annable

Rebecca, the half-sister of the others and William’s child with his mistress Holly Harper (played by Patricia Wettig), played by Emily VanCamp

Nora’s brother, Saul Holden (Ron Rifkin) helps run the Walker family business, Ojai Foods.

Bakit ko nagustuhan? The acting is really good. Wala masyadong hysteria.  Believable ika nga. The storyline is quite solid as well. On the first episode alone – the viewer will  already have a good feel on what the series is all about. The script is fluid. Sa dami ng main characters – the writers are able to provide each character scenes that highlights the character’s personality. Anyway – as of presstime J - I have watched only 2 episodes… kaya nga sabi ko “slightly hooked” pa lang. I think a couple more episodes and I will be able to confim …. kung it’s a deal or no deal….este kung ma-hook na ba talaga ako. I will also try to find if I can download the episodes… For the meantime — walang choice – susubaybayan ko na lang muna sa Channel 5.. at titiisin ang mga commercials na walang kwenta…  hay…

P.S. For more info on this show — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_%26_Sisters_%282006_TV_series%29

Comfort Food

July 30, 2007

A colleague wanted to have ice-cream for merienda. I asked why the craving ….. wala naman daw… just need comforting.  Para sa kanya pala – ice cream is a “comfort food”.  Yup — a term that Dr. Phil and Oprah does not approve.  According to their psychobabble – emotional eating (or need to eat for comfort) when sad or depress is the main reason of obesity.  Well.. that may be true…. Pero mga pinoy tayo. We don’t go to shrinks when we feel down and troubled. Minsan we talk to a friend or a love one. Hence – comfort food is a very popular term para sa mga Pinoy.

Bakit? May sagot ako dyan. Pinag-isipan ko mabuti yan.  Personally – naniniwala ako na nagiging comfort food ang isang pagkain if you can associate it with a happy feeling or a feeling of relief. So na-associate ko ang chicken sopas with the love and care of my mom. J So I associate lugaw with the happy celebration and family togetherness of the season.

Everytime I do feel sad or depress — a hot bowl of sopas or arrozcaldo somehow diminish the bad feelings. Parang nabibigyan ako ng relief… ng hope… ng reminder na lahat ng nangyari na masama ay temporary lang .. and sooner or later – things will be okay.

It’s over?

July 26, 2007

Warning:  Contains Spoilers of the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Read at your own risk.

Walang sisihan!  Finally …. I finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows last night.  How was it? Hmmm… a roller coaster ride! Grabe… characters are dying here and there. Nakakalungkot e. As in affected hehehehe.. Wag nyo na ako pagtawanan — nasubaybayan ko kasi si Harry since he first became a wizard.

Hmp. Ayun – nasaksak tuloy si Dobby at namatay! Hmp. He died a hero! Hay…. tapos yung nilagay pa sa tombstone nya “Here lies Dobby, a free elf”… hay… kaiyak…..

Kasi after ng lahat ng pinagdaanan nya – minsan he still make stupid mistakes…. Kaya ayun.. napapahamak sila.  Pero afterwards – naisip ko rin.. he’s only 17. Sa lahat ng pinagdaanan nya – a few mistakes once in a while is forgivable.  Alam naman natin na he’s really not that great with magic…. but he possess courage and bravery … love and inate goodness. At itong mga qualities na ito ang dahilan why he was able to survive lahat ng obstacles na napagdaanan nya…. why he was able to be of Voldemort’s equal.  Of course – those people around him helped so much – but during those critical times that really matter – he was alone… it was all him.

Expectation is really high for this book – especially the final confrontation between Harry and Voldemort. Initially - it did not meet my expectation. However – naisip ko rin na I may have too high expectation. Not a spectacular — but still really good. Nung una ko kasing nabasa – naisip ko na nadefeat na naman nya si Voldemort on a technicality. Pero after re-reading the chapter — naisip ko na it is as what is expected. Harry on the other hand showed bravery beyond compare – his greatest quality. The previous books have laid the groundwork – and the final confrontation is just finishing it.

The book also answered a lot of questions na matagal na nasa sa isipan nang lahat … and more. There are a few surprises especially on the last few chapters. Suggestion ko lang — read and reread the  last chapters. As with the other books – the last few chapters are more of a narration of what has transpired… an explanation kung bakit nangyari ang mga nangyari.

I can go on and on about the book – pero I do think it will be better if you get to experience reading the book yourself.  Me telling the story is like robbing you of the joys and pleasure the book have provided me.

As for the Potter fans — does the last book means it all over? Nope. I don’t think so. We still have 2 Harry Potter movies to look forward to. And if you are like me —- I can read and reread the seven Harry Potter books a million times… and it will still be like reading it for the first time – a great adventure with the Boy who lived!

Sari-sari ngayong Martes

July 24, 2007

Since old model na sya — di ko alam kung titigil ba sya or mag-snooze lang and after a few minutes mag-alarm ulit. If it’s the second scenario — naku… patay… ang ingay nung phone ko! Nagulat nga yung isang amo… as in napatingin sya talaga ha.  Di sya makapaniwala na maaga ako! Hmp. Yung cellphone? Give up na baga!

How I wish! I hate office despedidas – pag kasama ang sangka-amuhan. Dami kasing dapat isipin :

b. Another concern ay yung  amoy nung lugar.

Sa mga ganitong event – you should sit as far as you can sa mga amo.

Hmm… dyan na papasok ang usapang weather, ruffa-ylmaz (kung puro kayo pinoy) o unmentionable ni Britney Spears na medyo sumungaw (pag may ibang lahi kayong kasama), new places to eat at movies to watch out for. Kung medyo mamalasin – pwede na ring itake ito as an opportunity para mga team meeting!e.        To smile or not to smile – Yup… syempre sa dulo mag-group picture kayo. To remember this moment by. So either way – talo.

4.    Kahapon pala ang State of the Nation Address (SONA) ni Ate Glow. Recycled daw yun – para good for the environment.

You can visit the link : http://forge.codedgraphic.com/lakbayan/

Monday Blues

July 23, 2007

1.        Today is my father’s birthday! I almost forgot – terrible in remembering dates. Kasi  nagasabi sa akin ang tatay na pupunta sya dito for a vacation with my stepmom – and they still need to tell me the date para maibook ko ang flight kaagad. Anyway — Happy Birthday  Tatay… I know you are happy! J

2.        I was reading a blog – di ko kilala kung sino… and there was an entry regarding Cebu inmates field demonstration or something. May youtube site — so tiningnan ko. Nakakatuwa! Preso man … ay talented pa rin! If you have time.. the links are :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdz38TIwqIQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBaw8UdTTH8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps7VFGQi74k

4.        Heard that Wendy and Bruce will have their own teleserye on ABS-CBN! Aba… talagang sikat na ang Wendy. Ano kaya yung storyline? J

5.      Around 8:30++ a.m. last Saturday ay nasa Times Bookstore na ako sa may Tampines. I bought a copy of the new Potter book – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I was reading it… pero medyo tinigilan ko muna… Hmp!

Unleashed!

July 21, 2007

The day has arrived! Bought a copy at 8:30 a.m. today. It was Potter fever everywhere I looked. One big surprise — saw Hagrid selling Potter books at Easpoint mall!

Samu’t Sari

July 20, 2007

1.        I had lunch with old colleagues at 7107 restaurant today. Yup… I gave the place another chance. And I am glad that I did. We ordered the Bulalo, Pinakbet and Crispy Pata.  The Bulalo is okay… but I don’t recommend it…. However the Pinakbet is a must try. Too bad there’s no Inihaw na Bangus! The Crispy Pata is good as well.  I think it’s better than GPs. And cheaper too! I was initially skipping dessert but everyone ordered Halo-halo. Dahil nainggit ako – I decided to order also kahit na hindi masyadong maganda ang pinagsamahan naming last time. Surprisingly – it was better than the last time. Okay na rin sya for its price. All in all – I am quite satisfied with the sumptuous lunch.

2.        Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released today midnight ( or is it considered as tomorrow already?). I can’t wait to buy a copy and read it. According to a news article in Inquirer – the New York Times reviewed the book and mentioned that 6 characters will die! J.K Rowling previously mentioned 2…… Hopefully – Harry won’t die… otherwise –that will kill the idea of a future book! Unless bumangon siya from the dead…or natuto syang gumawa ng Horcux.

3.        Still with Harry — Jessica Zafra wrote an entry in her blog regarding the Order of the Phoenix movie. She asked the most important question of all — “What happened to the Voldemort guy’s nose?” J Interesting… her blog link is http://jessicarulestheuniverse.com/2007/07/18/frumious-lord-schnozzless/

4.        Finally – after so much delay – I finished watching Season 1 of Heroes! Medyo sad tuloy ako…. Kasi tapos na. They saved the cheerleader and saved the world. Or so it seems.  Season 2 is entitled Heroes : Generations… a prequel. Ano kaya ang tagline ng Season 2? Hmm….  Pwedeng “Heroes! Heroes! Pwede na “Heroes: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”.

5.        This week’s favorite tunes :

a. How to Save a Life album of the Fray… specially How to Save a Life, Over my Head and She is

b. Papaya – Urszula Dudziak

c. It’s a love thing – The Whispers

d. Changing Times – Earth, Wind and Fire

b, c and d are the songs being played in Game Ka Na Ba. Naaliw ako kay Edu pag sumasayaw. The song Papaya never fails to put me in a happy mood!

Yun na lang muna! Happy Weekend!!!!!

I-vote, Kopi-O, Sapatos at Gunting

July 19, 2007

 1.  I read in the Inquirer that the Internet Test vote for OFWs in Singapore is set to start tomorrow - July 20 and will end on August 8. Di talaga ako interesado – pero nagabago ang aking pananaw nang nalaman ko na mayroong electronic raffle (laptop, mobile phones and an iPhone) for those who will participate in the mock test.

Sa mga interesado  – below links will be helpful.

http://www.philippine-embassy.org.sg/index.cfm?GPID=185

http://www.comelec.gov.ph/oav/internet_voting/flyer.html

  2. I encountered a mishap this morning. I tried rinsing it with warm water… pero no effect talaga.  Isip ko na i-tuck-in na lang… kaso I am wearing a polo barong style shirt. So the idea is a big NO-NO! Not unless willing ako mahuli ng fashion police. J.  I was thinking of buying a new shirt – kaso nagtitipid ako. Final decision — No DEAL  este…deadma! Di na lang ako magtatayo at maglalalakad – hay… ma-force tuloy akong mag-focus sa aking work! Bad Kopi Auntie! Bad!

Kopi-O  - Black Coffee with sugar

Kopi-C – Coffee with Evaporated Milk and Sugar

Kopi – Coffee with Condensed Milk

Pag special order – add the below words at the end

Siew-tai – less sweet

Ka-tai – more sweet

Ko-song – no sugar

So… Kopi-O Siew Tai – Black coffee with sugar, less sugar….. gets?

3. Bought a new pair of black shoes last Sunday. I was in agony the entire week na sinuot ko ito. Hay… so no choice but to buy a new one. As long as presentable – and comfortable.. Oks na.  Lady luck was on my side last Sunday… I found the perferct pair on the 3rd store. I have been wearing it for 4 days now.  So far….  Okay pa naman.

4. I mentioned in my previous blog that I will try to write something about the book “Running with Scissors”. I don’t have the patience to write a full book review. Baka duguin ang utak ko sa pag-english. J  Isa pa… wala talaga ako tiyaga to do book reviews.. I find it dull and boring hehehehe. Anyway – the book is hmm… different… a little disturbing at some point… but is a good read.  It is supposed to be a Memoir… so I am a little skeptical that such drama can happen to one person and still come out as a sane individual.  The book is about the childhood of the author - Augusten. His parents divorced… he lives with his “feeling diva”–trying hard to be a writer-found out that she’s a lesbian-lunatic mother. Dahil sa naloloka na yung nanay – the mother decided that the Augusten should live with the doctor’s family. If I remember correctly – the family is composed of the unconventional shrink, the wife na accepted na may mga babae yung doctor, a daughter na pina-legally ampon dun sa isang may edad na lalaki na naging syota nito, a daughter who works for the doctor na di pa nagkakarelasyon - ever, a 30 something gay male na ampon nung doctor and isang patient nung duktor  na takot sa dumi Sabihin na lang natin they live a very mentally colorful life. Dito na rin narealize nung author that he is gay ( mga 12 or 13 yata sya nun) — and naging lover nya yung 30+ years old na ampon nung doctor. Yung Nanay naman nya ay may mga “issues” din like – nagkaroon ng kalive-in na wife ng pastor, nag-uwi sa bahay nila ng isang ex-convict na lalaki na naka-threesome nila nung lover nya na babae, claimed that she was being molested by the shrink and had a relationship with a waitress. Basta — yan.. nagsanga-sanga na yung mga buhay nila. Ending — hehehe… wag na.. baka may gustong magbasa – sisihin pa akoBasta isa lang ang sigurado — Augusten grew up and become a New York Best Seller writer… obvious ba… Memoir nga e….  Dun naman sa tamad magbasa – there is already a movie version starring Annette Benning (as the mother) and Joseph Cross (as Augusten). 2006 pa raw ito napalabas sa US and shown last Feb dito sa Singapore…hmm..  hanapin na lang natin sa DVD.

Do I recommend the book … oo naman… wala lang… nakakasawa na rin kasi minsan yung same plot… eto.. kakaiba… promise… J .
